This traditional sauerkraut recipe takes so little effort and will absolutely blow your mind
Balkan people have a hard time imagining their winter table without podvarok, which is a traditional recipe made basically with baked sauerkraut.
There are a dozen of recipes on the Internet, however the one we present you today is the most basic, the way the old Balkan housewive used to cook it. Meat, a little oil or animal fat, garlic, salt and pepper, nothing complicated, but this recipe will blow you away for sure!
If you are vegan, feel free to ditch the meat – it will be super tasty, or you can add potatoes to enrich the dish.
INGREDIENTS: -one whole sauerkraut cabbage (arround 4lbs), -one big red onion, oil, salt and pepper, -bacon -dried meat, turkey meat, chicken meat or any other meat by choice
PREPARATION: Chop the sauerkraut, then wash it a little and let it dry. Heat the oil on the stove, add the red onion and the bacon and simmer it for 5-10 minutes. Then add the meat and cook 10 more minutes. After that add the sauerkraut and stir-fry for aditional 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper and put it in the oven for 90 minutes on 400F.
Serve the podvarok with mashed potatoes or baked potatoes.
